A recording of Sri Chinmoy from 1982 reciting a selection of his poetry.
The first poem on the recording is The Absolute, a poetic description of the highest meditative consciousness.
The Absolute
“No mind, no form, I only exist;
Now ceased all will and thought;
The final end of Nature’s dance,
I am it whom I have sought.
A realm of Bliss bare, ultimate;
Beyond both knower and known;
A rest immense I enjoy at last;
I face the One alone.
I have crossed the secret ways of life,
I have become the Goal.
The Truth immutable is revealed;
I am the way, the God-Soul.
My spirit aware of all the heights,
I am mute in the core of the Sun.
I barter nothing with time and deeds;
My cosmic play is done.”
Sri Chinmoy, My Flute, Agni Press, 1972.
Some of his poem/aphorisms are conversations between man and God; they are imbued with the sweetness of the devotee and the Lord, between the lover and the Beloved. Other poems are reflections on spiritual truths that one encounters on the way to the Goal.
Running through this collection of poems, like a string holding many pearls together, is Sri Chinmoy’s love for God and for humanity. Sri Chinmoy’s voice carries the sweetness of devotion.
His poetry has also a candid innocence, as if it was a child that was reciting, a divine child. This illumining, pure light feeds our longing hearts with joy . It is indeed a breath of fresh air, and it expresses our common aspiration for something higher and deeper, more meaningful in our life.
“Birds of a feather flock together”, it is said. In the same way, all spiritual qualities come from the same Source. Where real Joy is felt, Light and Peace are there, like colors of a rainbow. For that reason, listening to these poems can help a seeker’s meditation practice. They will help these spiritual qualities to bloom and blossom in the seeker’s heart.
Many of these poems are part of a collection of poems entitled “Ten Thousand Flower-Flames”.
Comparing a running marathon to the poetic marathon of writing ten thousand poems, Sri Chinmoy wrote:
“One marathon-world
Leads me into another marathon-world.
To satisfy this new marathon-world,
Or to be satisfied by this new one, will be
Infinitely – I really mean it –
More difficult.
For here it is not just twenty-six miles
and 385 yards to run,
But to sow the seeds
Of ten thousand flaming flower-poems
Which at long last I shall place
Devotedly, unreservedly and unconditionally
At the Compassion-Feet
Of my Beloved Supreme.”
Sri Chinmoy, Ten Thousand Flower-Flames, Part 1, Agni Press, 1979.
We hope you enjoy these spiritual poems.
