In this selection of live meditation music, we offer five performances from the middle of October, 2019. Some (those from October 10) were part of our Mahasamadhi Anniversary observance, while others are part of our weekly group meditations.
In his teachings about meditation, Sri Chinmoy pointed out the benefits of both individual daily meditations and group meditations:
Question: How may a disciple receive the maximum benefit during collective meditation in a group?
Sri Chinmoy: “When you meditate with a group, feel that the seekers sitting together are not separate entities but only one entity. Do not think of each individual disciple. Feel that you are the only person meditating and you are entirely responsible for the meditation. Collective meditation is meditation with the feeling of inseparable oneness, absolute oneness. You are the only person meditating and you are the one who is watching yourself; there is nobody else. You are the observer and you are the seeker, not because of your ego, but because of your inseparable oneness.
Otherwise you may look to one side and think, “What have I done today that I cannot meditate as well as she?” Or, “Why do I have to meditate beside him? His consciousness is so low.” Or, “Why did I come here? Let me go home and meditate.” This way you will think that somebody is meditating better than you or that somebody is dragging you down and it is beneath your dignity to meditate with him. When you start meditating collectively, if you take everyone as your own, then you will have a good meditation. When all have entered into you, when everyone is flowing in you and through you, then you will get the maximum benefit.”
Question: Guru, I was told that some disciples go to New York to see you on their birthdays. Is it more important to you that we all go on your birthday or on our birthdays?
Sri Chinmoy: If you go to New York on my birthday, it will be much more worthwhile for you. If you come on my birthday, then you will see all your brother and sister disciples. You will have their inspiration, plus the power of group meditation. There will be morning meditations almost every day, and other big meditations. There will be two weeks of spiritual activities every day, two weeks of joy and inspiration. But, if you go on your birthday, you will see only the local disciples. You will not get the strength of the long group meditations or the inspiration of multifarious spiritual activities every day.
Part of these multifarious activities is music performances; disciples from many Sri Chinmoy Centres around the world perform their artistic and spiritual interpretations of Sri Chinmoy’s devotional songs. Some groups are exclusively vocal. Other groups will have voices with a very subtle accompaniment, such as a harmonium. Again, other groups will offer these interpretations and arrangements in a more conventional Western manner, with various instruments (guitar, piano, percussion, flutes, etc.) and voices together.
Irrespective of the style and instrumentation, the intention remains the same: to share the inner beauty, light and peace derived from prayer and meditation through the medium of music, the universal language.
Question: How can a person manifest the highest, most joyful music in his soul while playing a musical instrument?
Sri Chinmoy: While playing a musical instrument, you have to feel that music is the universal language, that music has and also is the key to unlock the Heart-Door of the Supreme. It is only music that has a free access to unlock the Heart-Door of the universal Heart of the Supreme. If you can do that, then the musician in you will be able to manifest the Highest.
We hope that these soulful performances by Sri Chinmoy’s disciples will inspire you in your inner journey.
