Tales from the Mahabharata: The king leaves for the forest

Last modified May 5, 2016

This tale is told by Sanjaya Spettigue, who has been regaling his fellow students of Sri Chinmoy with tales from the Mahabharata, India’s ancient epic, for many years.

This tale occurs near the end of that great epic – the climactic battle has just ended and the Pandava brothers are now assisting the old blind King, Dhritarashtha in ruling the kingdom. Everybody is still keenly feeling the loss of so many people after that great battle. After fifteen years, the king now decides to go into exile into the forest to practice spiritual disciplines, accompanied by his wife Gandhari, and Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas.
