Thought of the Day: On Sikhism
Last modified June 18, 2007
Sikhism is one of the world’s major religions, although maybe not as well known in the West, as it is in India and the Middle East.
Sri Chinmoy states that Guru Nanak was “a very great Spiritual Master”. The story of how he achieved illumination is most fascinating. In Sri Chinmoy’s writings we find a few stories about Guru Nanak. His life was full of miracles. Even Guru Nanak’s death had a miraculous ending! Indeed, his miracle-power helped to expedite the spiritual progress of Truth-seekers and God-lovers of his time.
Sikhism’s fifth Guru, Guru Arjun Dev, was tortured and killed by the Moghul Emperor Jahangir in the year 1606. His martyrdom galvanized the Sikhs, preparing them to face any outer onslaughts.
Guru Nanak’s utterances are also very deep and illumining. Here is an example, taken from a small collection of his utterances:
“Even Kings and emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion cannot compare with an ant filled with the love of God.”
-Guru Nanak
