This is an album of sitar music by Dr. Madan Shankar Mishra. The songs are composed by Sri Chinmoy, and are different types of Bhajan – devotional songs to Krishna, Kali, and others.
The notes on the album state:
“Dr. Pandit Madan Shankar Mishra, coming from a family of devoted musicians who preserved the rich heritage of traditional music for the last six generations, was inspired into the art of playing the sitar by his father, Pt. Uma Shankar Mishra. Under the guidance of his illustrious father, Dr. Madan Shankar Mishra devoted himself to the art of mastering the Sitar. Dr. Madan Shankar Mishra is a disciple of Sri Chinmoy.
“Consistent devotion and practice soon propelled him into prominence and today he is recognized as one of the few mature young sitar players in India. He follows Mahar-Madhubani tradition of Sitar playing.
“Dr. Mishra feels that playing Sri Chinmoy’s compositions on his Sitar gives him the highest consciousness of The Heaven. Dr. Mishra always feels great feeling and privileged to include Sri Chinmoy’s songs in his concerts.”
May we add that the devotion in his music is matched only by the beauty of the tone his Sitar produces!
Our gratitude to Dr. Madan Shankar Mishra for this devoted offering.
