Alexander the third of Macedon, born 356 BC, single-handedly changed the entire nature of the ancient world in little more than ten years. The young King of Macedonia, leader of the Greeks, overlord of Asia Minor and the Pharaoh of Egypt, also became the Great King of Persia at the age of 25, creating an empire that stretched across three continents. Educated by Aristotle, he united his territories by a common Greek language and culture, himself adopting foreign customs in order to rule his millions of ethnically diverse subjects. These tales from Sri Chinmoy focus on his great and gentle side showing not only compassion but also understanding and forgiveness.
The Old Lady Who Acted In Self-defence
In their march across Asia, Alexander’s men brought before him an old lady they accused of murder. Under pressure she courageously spoke the truth and the king’s response shocked not only her, but also his men.
Alexander The Great And Alexander The Lazy
An unthinkably lazy soldier served in King Alexander’s army, and was hated by all for his dull behaviour. Finally the rest of the men brought him before the king. In one sentence King Alexander transformed him overnight into an inspiration for the entire army.
Alexander The Great And The Pirate
A feared and notorious pirate who plundered boats and raided villages along a coastline is finally caught and held before the mighty Emperor. Facing certain death the pirate speaks with a shocking insight that stuns Alexander and his subjects.
The Turning Point
Alexander and his army swept all before them and reached the western frontiers of India. Over time he became curious about their way of life and deep spirituality. One day he accepted an invitation by some monks in a small village to sit with them amongst the dust of the road and learn about their teachings.
