Sri Chinmoy arrived in America on April 13, 1964, following an inner command to come and serve the aspiring souls in the West with the fruits of his prayer-life and meditation-life. Through his creative efforts in the fields of music, art, literature and sports, he aimed to inspire us to lead a higher life; to find the highest and deepest essence within ourselves in order to become perfect instruments of the Divine, to serve humanity.
Following this fountain of inspiration, Sri Chinmoy composed more than 22,000 songs, of which most are in his native Bengali. In the field of art, he painted more than 100,000 paintings, some of which have been shown at famous art museums around the world, including The Louvre and The Guggenheim, In the field of literature, he wrote more than 1,500 books which include prose, poetry and plays.
Sri Chinmoy entered the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in southern India at the age of 11. For the next 20 years he practised Integral Yoga, which included prayer and meditation, sports, art and literature. This combination of spirituality, creativity and dynamism embodies the modern flavor and style of Sri Chinmoy’s Path.
In his unending concern for humanity, Sri Chinmoy has tried to unite people from all over the world in a spirit of oneness, love and peace. In 1987 he founded The Peace Run, an international Olympic-style torch relay.

The flaming torch represents the dream of peace in each person’s heart, and as the torch is passed from person to person, it carries the universal good will and the dreams and hopes of each person for a world of peace.
