In his extensive musical career, Sri Chinmoy played many instruments. Among all the instruments he played, the esraj occupied a special place in Sri Chinmoy’s heart.
“O esraj, I am all gratitude to you
For bringing to the fore
The divine musician in me.”
-Sri Chinmoy
Seventy-Seven Thousand Service-Trees, Part 16, Agni Press, 1999.
The esraj is an Indian instrument. It is held on the lap and bowed. It has a very lyrical sound, somewhere between a violin and an oboe. Sri Chinmoy’s devotional songs have the feeling of the heart’s ascending cry, and the esraj’s tone and quality are specially suited to transmit that feeling of the human soul, crying for the Divine; yearning to ascend to the Highest.
From 1984 to 2007, Sri Chinmoy offered around 800 concerts of soulful music. In these concerts, he played and sang his own melodies, his devotional songs. Each concert started with an esraj performance.
The esraj has a very soothing and peaceful quality, and at the same time an inner intensity, much like a spiritual seeker of the highest Truth.
We hope that this esraj concert by Sri Chinmoy will inspire you in your spiritual journey.
